New Client Consultations
What Should You Expect from Your Electrolysis Consult?

All new clients will have a one hour consultation appointment with the electrologist that will be performing their treatments. This appointment will include about 30 minutes of discussion that usually covers the following topics:

  • What techniques will be used during treatment sessions.

  • What your goals are for hair removal outcomes.

  • Proper preparation and aftercare for electrolysis.

  • Client comfort and pain management.

  • Evaluation of treatment are and hair type / quantity.

We follow up the discussion portion of the consultation with about 30 minutes of electrolysis. This aims to help us better understand what techniques will best suit your particular hair type and treatment goals so we can work with you to come up with a plan for treatment that fits your needs.

Preparing for Electrolysis
What Should You Do Before Your Sessions?

Taking care of your skin and hair, indeed your whole body, is an important part of ensuring effective electrolysis treatments. Here's what you should be doing before each session:

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Clean Your Skin
Remove any makeup before treatment. For body treatments shower as close to your treatment time as possible.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Grow Your Hair Out
Let the hairs to be treated grow out for about 3-4 days before your session. You should have a minimum of 3mm of growth.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Hydrate Well
Ensuring proper hydration helps with both the treatment and healing of electrolysis.
If you're thirsty, drink!

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Discontinue Retinoids
Stop using retinoids, skin lightening products, or any topical product that dries out the skin at least one week before treatment.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Exfoliate
Gently exfoliate the treatment area every few days. Using a washcloth and a gentle cleanser or soap is enough for most people.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Sun Exposure
Stay out of the sun for 48 hours before treatment to help reduce or avoid the risk of post-treatment hyperpigmentation.

Pain Management with Electrolysis
What Helps with Pain During Treatment?

Pain management can be intimidating for many clients and it's our goal here at Evolution Electrolysis to help you reduce and manage pain from treatment. While the amount of pain felt during treatment will vary from client to client there are things that can help.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Eat a Little Something
We stock snacks and drinks in case you forget, but try eating a meal or a filling snack before you arrive to help you feel your best during the treatment process.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Minimize Stress
Stress can increase your sensitivity to treatment, so choose appointment times that avoid particularly charged times.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Get Comfy
We provide blankets, soft toys, and other items to help relieve stress but feel free to bring headphones, your favorite show, or a support person to help you feel at ease!

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Menstrual Days
Some clients may find they are more sensitive before or during their menstrual cycle and may wish to avoid treatment at that time.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Take Something
Try taking your preferred over-the-counter pain medicine about 30 minutes before treatment. You can also talk to your Primary Care Doctor about other options.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Stimulants
Eating things that are stimulants like caffeine, chocolate, or high sugar foods on the day of treatment can increase sensitivity.

Electrolysis Aftercare
What to do After Your Sessions?

It's important to follow aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing of the treated site.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Expect Some Regrowth
Regrowth is normal. Hair removal takes time and commitment; it’s a gradual process. Consider scheduling several treatments ahead of time to keep your progress on track.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Touching / Picking
Refrain from touching the treated area to avoid introducing bacteria.
If small crusts form, allow them to fall off naturally. Picking can lead to scarring or infection.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Sun Exposure
Avoid extended sun exposure for 72 hours after treatment. Injured or irritated skin can overproduce pigment when exposed to UV rays, leading to hyperpigmentation or brown spots.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Use Hydrocortisone
If your skin is still irritated on the second day, apply an OTC 1% hydrocortisone cream. These anti-inflammatory creams will reduce redness and swelling.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

No Tweezing
Tweezing/waxing/threading can counteract the benefits of electrolysis and may result in thicker hair regrowth. If you can’t make your next appointment, trim or shave the hair instead.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Apply a Soothing Balm
Use aloe vera or an unscented, light moisturizer on the treated area the night after treatment. Keeping the area moisturized promotes quicker healing and prevents the formation of crusts. Use clean hands to apply.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Makeup & Perfume
Do not apply makeup or perfume to the treated area for 24 hours or longer for extensive treatments.
Use gentle cleansers/moisturizers and keep your skin clean & dry.

Evolution Electrolysis logo

Avoid Swimming
Do not swim for the first 24 hours following treatment, to avoid exposure to chlorine or bacteria in recreational water.

Follow these instructions to have the most successful electrolysis session and to reduce the risk of certain reactions, including but not limited to: redness, swelling, weeping, crusting, scabbing, tiny red dots, raised bumps, infection, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, pitting and scarring.

About Electrolysis

What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis has been providing permanent hair removal since 1875. Electrolysis is used as a general term to refer to a method of hair removal that treats individual unwanted hairs using small pulses of electricity to destroy the cells responsible for the hair's growth. Over time this will provide permanent hair removal. In fact, electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal that is approved by the FDA.
What Electrolysis methods do you use?
The Apilus Xcell Pur allows our electrologists to use High Frequency Thermolysis, Galvanic, and Blended Current methods. The type of current used will vary depending on each clients needs, contraindications, and hair type, depth, and location.
How does Electrolysis work?
Thermolysis uses a high frequency current to heat the albumin within the hair follicle. This heat causes it to coagulate and destroys the hair papilla which feeds growth. Thermolysis is very fast, but usually requires multiple treatments to ensure the entire follicle is destroyed.
Galvanic, or true Electrolysis, uses a direct current to create a chemical reaction within the hair follicle. It reacts with electrolytes in the follicle and surrounding tissue to create a caustic soda which neutralizes the cells that generate hair growth. Because it takes time for this process to happen Galvanic takes a little longer (up to 9 seconds) to treat each hair but may require fewer individual treatments for each hair to achieve complete destruction.Blended methods use a little of each current type to find a good middle ground that uses the heat from thermolysis and the caustic soda from electrolysis to get a relatively fast (>5 seconds) treatment that is still highly effective. Will Electrolysis work on my hair color & type?
Because electrolysis focuses on treating each individual hair it is effective on all hair and skin types. Electrolysis can even treat problem hairs that other treatment types leave behind!
What does Electrolysis feel like? Will it hurt?
Most clients experience anything from a light tingling to a mild stinging sensation. Our equipment offers the latest in electroepilation technology and allows us to adjust settings to minimize your discomfort during sessions. The experience may vary for each person, and can be different for different areas of the body. If you're concerned about pain you can take an over the counter pain medicine about 30 minutes before your session or talk to your Primary Care Doctor for other options.
Where can hair be removed from?
The electrolysis process can be used on any part of the body's exterior. It cannot be removed from inside the ear canal or from the inside of the nose. At Evolution Electrolysis we focus on facial hair removal as well as hair removal in any location for transgender clients preparing for surgery. We aren't currently offering treatment for legs or underarms.
I have hair regrowth from the treated site. Is this normal?
Yes, having hair regrowth at the treated site is totally normal. Particularly early in your Electrolysis journey.
This usually happens for a couple reasons. First, electrolysis is only able to treat hairs we can see. Hair follicles go through active and dormant periods, so hairs that emerge soon after treatment are likely hairs that were dormant at the time of treatment. The other reason you may see hair regrowth is that the electrolysis treatment may have only treated part of the follicle. This is very common and treated hairs often return finer. If you are coming regularly you may see sudden decreases in hair regrowth as treatment progresses. It will take months to years to fully treat an area depending on the size of the area, density of the hair, length and frequency of treatments, and your hair and skin types. Is there any reason I can't have electrolysis?
As with any treatment there are some reasons you may not be able to have electrolysis done. Our intake form process ensures we gather all needed information to make sure we're aware of any contraindications before you begin treatment. Since Evolution Electrolysis has multiple methods of treatment available we can usually find a treatment type that will work with most clients. If you have updates to your health let us know so we can adjust your treatment plans.

Prep & Aftercare

How can I reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation?
While some elements of hyperpigmentation are related to your skin type it's important to make sure that you avoid sun exposure to minimize any pigmentation that does develop. Some areas of the skin may naturally be more prone to hyperpigmentation. This typically clears up within a few months as the skin completes its healing process.
Why do I need to stay hydrated?
All methods used in electrolysis rely on water as a key part of their processes. Being dehydrated can lead to less effective and less comfortable treatments. So while you may not need to drink more than you normally would it's important to avoid medicines, activities, or habits that might leave you dehydrated on the day of treatment.
Why shouldn't I tweeze / wax / thread between sessions?
All of these methods remove hair by pulling it out. This process damages the dermal papilla where the hair generates from. This can cause the hair follicle to become distorted, which makes it much more difficult to treat effectively. We recommend that you shave between treatments as this both ensures a healthy follicle for us to work on and makes for short, easy to grip hairs which can help with effectively targeting treated hairs.
I want to uses a numbing cream to help with treatment. When and how should I apply it?
When using a numbing cream it's essential that you apply a thick layer of the product to the treatment area at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before treatment to give the product time to soak in and activate. You can keep the area moist by covering the area with a film such as plastic kitchen wrap until your treatment time.

Scheduling & Timing

How many sessions will I need?
Every individual is different and how many sessions you’ll need to accomplish your goal will depend on several factors, including your comfort levels, hair density, hormone levels, your hair growth cycle, and the size of the area to be treated. We will formulate a plan to suit your needs during your consultation!
How often should I get electrolysis treatments?
How often you choose to get treatments is up to your preference, availability, tolerance, and budget. Many clients choose to schedule regular appointments on a bi-weekly basis. You may choose to visit more frequently for shorter sessions or less frequently for longer sessions. Regardless of how you choose to arrange your appointments it will be important to follow the treatment plan that you and your electrologist develop together during your initial consultation. Following this treatment plan helps to keep your progress on track.
I need to take a break from electrolysis, will I lose my progress?
Usually, no. The hairs that have been treated will remain treated and should not regrow. The exception to this if you are undergoing significant hormonal changes such as starting / stopping HRT, managing untreated PCOS, undergoing natural hormonal changes like menopause, pregnancy, and puberty. These conditions can all cause new hair follicles to become activated and stimulate the growth of new hairs. In these cases you may see new hair regrowing in between treatments.
I completed my treatments but I have a just a couple hairs that keep coming back. What should I do?
Although some regrowth is completely normal if you're having regrowth after completing treatment it's worth talking to your Primary Care Physician to rule out any medical reason for the regrowth such as the hormonal changes listed above. Particularly for clients with PCOS having a good management strategy can help reduce the need for follow up electrolysis. We do offer a short 5 minute session specifically for clients who just need a touch up here and there.

Payments & Policies

What is your cancellation policy?
Appointments that are cancelled with more than 24 hours notice will either be given a full refund or rescheduled for a new time.
Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice are still responsible for the booked time and cannot be issued a refund. How are late arrivals managed?
If you are late to your appointment we will make the best use of the time remaining for your appointment. Since we may already be booked for other clients and need time to sanitize and prep the room between appointments we can't guarantee that you'll be able to receive the full length of treatment booked if you arrive late.
Do I need to pay at booking?
Yes. All appointments are paid at time of booking. This ensures we are able to maximize the time spent actively doing electrolysis during your session by handling administrative tasks like billing ahead of time!
Do you accept cash or checks?
At this time we are not accepting cash or checks. All payments need to be made through the Vagaro system prior to your appointment.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance at this time. If you need help with costs for transition we recommend that you reach out to organizations that offer grants or other assistance such as Trans Lifeline's Microgrants, Point of Pride's Electrolysis Support Fund, and other similar funds. Here's a full list of resources.
We DO offer invoices if you're looking to get reimbursed from your insurance or HSA.
